SEO Basics – Part 1 On site optimization
On site optimization is only a small but crucial part of SEO. In this article I will attempt to explain the basic theory of on site optimization. When designing your site you should always adhere to this basic guideline. This by itself will not get your site ranked number one for a major keyword, however it will put your site on a path towards that goal.
Navigation Structure
When designing your site remember what the search engines need to index your entire site. Search engines cannot read images to a certain degree. Make sure that every page is linked with a simple text link. This can be done simply by placing a text navigation system at the bottom of your page. This not only ensures that search engine spiders can find all your pages but also gives your end users a simple way to navigate your site.
Creating a site map can go a long way to help steer the search engine spiders towards your entire site.
Title and Meta tags
Title is one of the most important parts of your site. You have a very limited space to tell the search engines what your site is about. The first few words in your title should be what you want people to find you by. For example if you have a plumbing site named “The Plumbing Store” and you are trying to get ranked for the keyword “plumbing in Chicago”. Your title would need to look something like this: “Plumbing In Chicago – The Plumbing Store” and not like this: “ The Plumbing Store – Plumbing in Chicago”. Your main keywords should always be first.
Meta-tags are not as important as they once were but they still do hold some weight. A great example of this is the description tag. This is what will be listed on the search engines directly under your title. Make sure this is clear and easy to read. Do not fill this with spammy keywords. Meta-tags like the keywords tag should be used, however the weight of them has been greatly reduced. Use 10-20 keywords and do not use this as a space to spam your keywords.
Content
For on site optimization content is king. You will need to have at least 500 words on your main page or on the page you are attempting to get indexed. The main goal of any search engine is to index the most relevant content for any given subject matter. If you want to be the authority on any given subject then make yourself that authority. Hire a writer if you need to, but make sure your content is relevant and compelling. With this you will need to take the most time. Make sure this is easily readbale, clear and concise.
Make sure your keyword is present and has good keyword density in your text. This does not mean spam the keyword over and over again. Be clever, and utilize your keyword how it was meant to be used.
Part 2 will go into more detail on these subjects. Whatever you do remember one thing. This is not a war,.. Google is not the enemy. Google and the other search engines want to index your site. They want to have the most relevant content they can get, give it to them.
