A massive tornado has killed at least 10 people in Mississippi, including two children. Louisiana and Mississippi was expected to carry heavy thunderstorms, hail and a few tornadoes east toward Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida on Sunday.
Reports quoting Mississippi Governor Haley Barboursaid the tornadoes that blew through the center of the state obliterated houses and churches and uprooted trees and power lines, leaving rescue teams helpless.
He declared a state of emergency in 17 counties. Yazoo County, where four people died, was the worst affected. Five people died in Choctaw County, including two children, and one person died in Holmes County.
Yazoo City was the worst hit where at least 20 to 30 homes were destroyed and in some cases, residents were trapped inside the rubble. The tornado struck residential areas in the outskirts of the city and avoided the downtown area. There were at least 17 people injured.
Many homes in Lauderdale, Warren, and Madison counties were destroyed. After the tornado struck Yazoo County, it went in a northeasterly direction through Holmes and Choctaw Counties.

Roads were blocked by toppled trees and debris, which delayed the response by emergency response teams. Several injured people had to be airlifted to Jackson, Mississippi and others taken by ambulance. In areas where vehicle access was blocked, ATVs were used to transport the injured.
